Explore St. Petersburg’s Treasured Past

Standard DreamTrip
Discover the illustrious culture & heritage of the former capital of the Russian Empire on a comprehensive tour that takes you to such places as Peter-and-Paul Fortress & St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Book by July 21.

About Your Trip

Witness some of the top sights in the living museum of St. Petersburg — Russia’s cultural epicenter, most Westernized city and former capital. Start your adventure with a tour to take in its countless landmarks and amazing examples of 18th- and 19th-century architecture. Some highlights include Palace Square, Bronze Horseman, Senat Square, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and Anichkov Bridge. Then, rest your feet during a break before your afternoon visit to Peter-and-Paul Fortress and its cathedral that houses a bell tower, gilded cupola and burial place of Russian tsars, and then St. Isaac’s Cathedral, a neoclassical building that features a large dome, statues, reliefs and paintings.

Spend your day of leisure exploring more of this wonderful place. You can visit the city’s UNESCO World Heritage site — Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments — comprising more than 70 locations around the city. Or, head to Winter Palace, 1 of the Hermitage Museum’s 6 historic buildings and the site of ceremonial and private rooms of former emperors.

What we love:
• St. Petersburg was designed to showcase Russia’s growing global status and forward-thinking mentality, which can still be felt in the city today.
• The Hermitage Museum is famous for more than just art. Since the 18th century, it’s also been the home to dozens of cats — originally brought in to catch mice in the building — and the current group enjoys multiple caretakers and a dedicated press secretary.
• The foodie scene on Vasilievsky Island is known as one of Russia's premier locations for great dining that’s popular with St. Petersburg locals.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Destination

The remarkable heritage of St. Petersburg is belied by its relatively young age. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, the city displaced Moscow as the hub of the Russian Empire in 1712, and has since developed into a major industrial city, thanks in part to its coastal location and port access to Europe. His aim was also to build a modern city to rival those of Europe, which is evidenced by the grand canals, monuments, cathedrals and palaces that still draw admirers to the “Venice of the North.”

St. Petersburg is now the most Westernized city in Russia, as well as the country’s cultural capital, even though Moscow regained the national seat in 1918. The city boasts an extensive list of people who have made lasting contributions to international arts and sciences, including Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Igor Stravinsky, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Ivan Pavlov and more.
